What is a Data Factory? Data is the lifeblood of all organisations and without effective curation and access to data businesses struggle to manage day to day tasks – let alone implement strategic transformation.
Monica Jones, Chief Data Officer and Robert Moores, Senior Project Manager at the University of Leeds share how the Regulatory Reporting project is using the cloud-based Azure Data Factory service to deliver the HESA student return – a key statutory requirement for the University.
The session will include an overview of the solution, the constraints that have impacted the solution architecture and the capabilities and skills needed from the project team as well as sharing best practice and lessons learned.
The presentation will conclude with how the data factory will become embedded in the University’s enterprise data solution as it matures over time.

Monica Jones is the Chief Data Officer for the University of Leeds and Associate Director for Health Data Research (HDRUK), based in Leeds in the UK.
A technical expert and leader with extensive education, science and technology, healthcare knowledge and experience. Highly skilled CDO / CIO and Enterprise Architect with a proven track record of designing and delivering complex, high value solutions to exceptional standards. Many years’ experience defining strategy and directing, current and future, Information and Data Systems.
International clinical terminology and data standards (SNOMED CT, ICD-10, HL7 FHIR, OpenEHR) expert promoting safe and effective information for better outcomes. She is the Chair of the Design Authority (DA) and Scientific Committee for HDRUK North. She is also the senior technical lead for the YH Secure Data Environment (SDE).
As Managing Director for Animo Consultancy Ltd she provides specialist technical and advisory consultancy services for HDRUK, CRUK, MRC, Genomics England, NHS, MOD, MOHW; as well as executive coaching and mentoring.
Robert Moores:
Robert is a Senior Project Manager within the Transformation Office at the University of Leeds, currently leading a business-critical statutory returns project.
He has over 38 years IT experience across multiple sectors and roles, having worked in the UK, Australia and the US across finance, heath, utilities, IT systems integrator, tech startup and education.
Robert has held a wide variety of positions through his career including Developer, Analyst, Product Owner, Consultant, Associate IT Director, and Business and Solutions Architect.
He is a Certified Scrum Master, Management of Risk Practitioner and BCS Enterprise & Solution Architect Practitioner.
Robert is passionate about working with ‘lower case’ versions of agile and lean and has built communities of practice around these in previous roles
Away from the office Robert is a Director of Passion4Plants – a Leeds-based market garden business with a focus on regenerative agriculture.
