Smart Cities Hackathon

Organised by White Rose Innovation Agency

aql, Qomodo & Ingenuity have partnered to bring you the Smart Cities IoT Hackathon. Learn about aql’s smart-city-enabling IoT technology.

Using aql’s Core IoT platform and wealth of sensor data from our multiple living labs across the country, learn how IoT technology and infrastructure are enabling smart cities.

Get your hands on real-life data from our partners including the Eden Project, White Rose Park, Connected Cowes and Mobile Access North Yorkshire, learning how to read, translate, and visualise environmental data that is being used to make important decisions about the world around us. Learn how to use the Qomodo IoT Security platform to detect vulnerabilities in IoT Sensors.

Challenge overview:

Tier 1:

  • Learn about smart city sensors, how these work and how they provide real-time readings to our smart cities;
  • Learn how to use aql’s Core IoT platform to enable smart city development, including how to write custom sensor decoders, build rich dashboards and create live social media postings;
  • Create a Virtual Sensor and design the decoder, and engine to generate readings to use across the hackathon.

Skills you will learn: aql Core IoT Platform, Development Integrations to X and LoRaWAN.

Tier 2:

  • Create a Virtual Sensor using Node.JS. Generate readings for your sensor, and extend the challenge to incorporate readings for the Security Platform to identify;
  • Learn how our 4G/5G sensor boards work and learn how to flash and update low level C++ firmware to aql’s IoT sensor boards;
  • Learn how to build custom web elements using aql’s live aqi.core.aql.com, including JavaScript and CSS;
  • Create your own web elements with thousands of sensors across multiple real-world locations;
  • Create advanced data dashboards using thousands of live sensors available through aql’s Core IoT platform;
  • Create IoT Integrations into Qomodo  IoT Security Platform, to detect IoT Security vulnerabilities.

Skills you will learn: API’s for Core.aql.com Node.js, Docker, Javascript, HTML, CSS, InfluxDB, Grafana and Qomodo data analysis platform.

Tier 3:

  • Learn how to use Python to create smart cities data models, leveraging aql’s Python IoT Docker container;
  • Build smart city data models using the thousands of sensors available through aql’s Iot testbeds;
  • Capture data from third-party environmental sites for data enrichment;
  • All tiers will have access to aql’s smart city AI, which will allow all participants to learn how AI is now a living part of the working day. The AI can be used to help write code, build data models, and learn about IoT and how to use aql’s Core IoT platform.

Skills you will learn: API’s for Core.aql.com, Docker, Python.

The event organised by White Rose Innovation Agency is an ideal opportunity to learn about how aql’s industrial IoT solution enables smart city tech through their mobile network and their public API. You will have access to IoT device readings from over 1,000 live sensors that are deployed across a wealth of aql’s IoT testbeds, allowing you to learn all about LoRaWAN networking, API web development, reporting, and data visualisation.

The hackathon will provide challenges for a wide variety of experience levels. Whether you’re an IoT newcomer or have experience working with API integration and Python, there will be things for you to learn on the day. The challenges at the hackathon will cater to a wide variety of ability levels, from beginner to advanced. We will also have support available on the day to make sure everybody is able to engage in the challenges.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Will I need to bring my own laptop to this hackathon? Yes, to participate in the hackathon, laptops will be required. If you are coming as a group, it will be possible for multiple attendees to share a laptop and still get the most out of the day.
  • Do I need any special equipment to take part in the hackathon? Aside from a laptop, you will not need to bring any equipment. You will be informed of any software that is necessary to download for the hackathon ahead of time, all of which will be free and easily found.
  • I’m not very techy, can I still come to the hackathon? The challenges at the hackathon will cater to a wide variety of ability levels, from beginner to advanced. We will also have support available on the day to make sure everybody is able to engage in the challenges.
This event is aimed at: Innovators, developers, startup founders, project managers, designers, and marketers.
