• Hilary Carter, VP Research, The Linux Foundation
• Neil Stevenson, Principal Architect, Hazelcast. With over 30 years of industry experience, Neil has designed, developed, debugged, and supported software systems for numerous customers large and small. Initially a C and assembler programmer, most of the last 20 years have been Java-based, with a focus on distributed systems, data grids, and stream processing. Neil is an occasional committer to the Hazelcast code base, with special interest in GoLang.

Europe marks the first region explored in the new ‘World of Open Source’ research series launched by the Linux Foundation, exploring geographic trends and dynamics. In this session, findings from the 2022 Europe Spotlight study will be discussed, including the industries, countries, and technologies most impacted by open source project communities.
18:25 // ‘My Open Source Journey with Hazelcast’ // Neil Stevenson
In this talk, Neil will outline his experiences with open source software in general, and Hazelcast in particular. Initially unconnected to Hazelcast, Neil came across the software via the Spring Framework and became a keen user. This evolved into becoming a contributor, and then evolved again to becoming an employee.
So, the key theme of the talk will be around how open source projects blend community and paid staff as contributors; what each can bring to the software and how this works in practice – for Hazelcast, at least. Still a contributor to Hazelcast, Neil is also working on a couple of other open source projects, currently around tracing and web sessions.
