A UCD approach to business analysis: Human first

Organised by Hippo

At Hippo, we pride ourselves on being a digital services partner that puts people first and champions evidence-based design and delivery. We understand that having a diverse team unlocks our capacity for innovation, creativity and problem solving. As business analysts (BAs) working in a multi-disciplinary team, it can sometimes be tricky to balance business requests and user needs in a way that will be commercially viable.

This session aims to look at some of the ways that BAs can work with other professions in their team to collaborate, communicate and compromise effectively to fulfil the human-centred approach while still delivering value to our clients. We will give tips on best practice and consider some of the areas that can be problematic, giving suggestions on how to overcome these.

About the panel:

  • Elliot Seaton – Business Analyst, Hippo
    Elliott joined Hippo at the start of 2022 via their first ever Hippo Academy. With a background in Business Development, joining Hippo was the beginning of a new career. Over the last 2 years, Elliott has worked predominantly in the NHS, working with blended product, development and design teams to achieve positive outcomes for patients and clinical staff within the NHS. In that time he’s become keenly interested in the BA’s role in championing UCD principles whilst being predominantly in the domain of business requirements and needs;
  • Karen Cooper – Lead Business Analyst, Hippo
    Karen has been a business analyst for almost 10 years and joined Hippo over 2 years ago. With a background working in higher education, Karen has gone on to work as a BA in teams across public and private sector.
    She is passionate about working on projects that focus on delivering value to the customer, while engaging with clients to emphasise the importance of a human-centred approach. Karen has worked extensively in multi-disciplinary teams and will be bringing the BA perspective to this session to talk through some of the advantages and challenges;
  • Jack Haith – Senior UX Designer, Hippo
    Jack’s been a UX designer at Hippo for nearly 4 years, working on projects ranging from the NHS and government projects to telecoms and auth services for the private sector. With a background in the physical product design world, Jack brings a pragmatic user-centred approach to digital services with agile research and iteration;
  • Simon Donnelly – Senior Service Designer, Hippo
    Simon has worked in the UCD space for over a decade and has led service transformation projects across national, regional and local public services – in central and local government, NHS and primary and social care. With a background combining design, software engineering and IT management, he frequently works alongside Business Analysts, balancing business and technical requirements with user needs in a whole service context.
