How Business Changed Technology

Organised by Leeds Building Society

In the last 20 years, web and mobile technologies have had massive impacts on how we all live and do business – and the way we all live and do business has had just as much impact on how technologists use tech.

Leading players like Google and Facebook have built their success on huge scale immersive profiling of users to sell engagement as a highly profitable commodity. Those same players are also thought leaders and major technology providers to the global software eco-system – so nearly all of us are building with their tools and using their techniques, even if our business models are quite different.

The engineering environment that has emerged influences our digital products and interactions with our own customers in ways that are rarely discussed – even as the social impact of Big Tech gains a lot of media and public policy attention around privacy, exploitation and bias.

This in-person discussion is your opportunity to explore how these issues already affect you, understand what goes missing in the race for scale and engagement, see how this collides with regulatory concerns like the FCA’s Consumer Duty; and learn how technologists can react and adapt.
