Engineering a good Customer Eggsperience – Using web native technology to speed up and simplify the delivery of our loyalty platform

In 2022 Morrisons unveiled a new and improved ‘My Morrisons’ loyalty programme, making it easier for customers to save money.

As part of this new initiative our internal development team re-built our legacy apps on a single app code-base capable of delivering our new programme to Android, iOS, Mobile Web and Desktop.

In this talk we’ll discuss how we used ‘Web Native’ technologies such as React, Web Components and Capacitor combined with Firebase and Nx to speed up and simplify the development of new features and increase value to our customers.

We’ll demonstrate how a small development team were able to use their existing web skills whilst embracing native technologies to successfully launch across three platforms to millions of My Morrisons users.

Clara Beattie – Head of Technology – Marketing, Online & Wholesale, Morrisons

Clara’s track record is in digital product leadership and transformation, particularly in the fields of eCommerce, marketing tech , CRM and data. As Head of Technology Marketing , Online & Wholesale she’s responsible for developing the customer websites and apps, all the systems that run promotions and loyalty (My Morrisons) along with the technology that enables the onboarding and management of wholesale customers. Prior to joining Morrisons Clara was Head of Product at Daily Mail Group , responsible for leading large scale people / process / systems transformation programmes and setting their digital product strategy. Before that she was Head of Online at Direct Line Group.

Sagar Mehendale – Solutions Architect, Morrisons

Sagar brings in strong technical and domain knowledge of delivering projects in various domains. He is passionate about building high performance engineering and architecture teams delivering incremental value to customers. Expertise in Mobile and Web Development, Backend Services, Cloud Implementation, IOT full stack and Machine learning implementation. Currently working on solutions to enhance loyalty offerings and customer experience via implementation of strategic initiatives. Before joining Morrisons Sagar had extensive experience leading engineering teams in large IT organisations and startups.

James Hyatt – Technical Manager, Morrisons

James is a Technology Manager at Morrisons and leads the internal development team focusing on customer and colleague applications. He joined the business in 2018 after 7 years as Head of Front-End for Leeds Agency Numiko. James is passionate about the future of the web and focuses on technologies that can bring performant, accessible and engaging experiences to customers.

Callum Smale – Technology Specialist – Node/Typescript

Callum is a Technology Specialist at Morrisons and is a developer focusing on customer and colleague applications. He joined the business in 2020 after graduating from Warwick University and working at Nissan for one year.
